The Egypt Tourism Authority has announced that more than 1m British holidaymakers visited the country in 2011, despite political protests and civil unrest early in the year.

This figure makes the UK the second biggest tourism source market for the north African nation behind Russia, with Germany in third place.

Figures show that the average Briton visiting Egypt stays for just over 11 nights.

Looking forward to the coming year, the national tourist board predicted that visitor numbers will continue to grow as tour operators increase their capacity and airlines expand the range of available flights.

The country offers a range of destinations and activities for holidaymakers with various interests, with Sharm el Sheikh famous for its scuba diving and other watersports.

People more interested in learning about local history can book hotels in Cairo to check out attractions such as the Pyramids of Giza, the Sphinx and the Egyptian Museum.
