Belfast ranked among top destinations to visit in 2012
23 Jan 2012
Tourism Ireland has celebrated the inclusion of Belfast in a list of the top 21 places to visit this year compiled by Fodor's, the travel guide publisher.
The main factor that secured the city's place on the list was the fact that 2012 marks the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic, which was built in Belfast.
People planning a trip to the destination from 31 March will be able to see the world's largest Titanic exhibition, which will occupy a six-storey building with nine interactive galleries.
Fodor's also highlighted attractions such as the Titanic Quarter development, the dock and the slipways.
Siobhan McCauley, director of product development at the Northern Ireland Tourist Board, said the exhibition and other events scheduled for the coming year are expected to provide a 'huge lift' and sense of excitement for the region.
'This latest accolade from Fodor's will give another boost to our focused efforts to make 2012 an outstanding success story for tourism and deliver more jobs and revenue for Northern Ireland,' she added.
The tourism agency pointed out that direct flights to Belfast are available with Aer Lingus, Air France, bmibaby, easyJet and Flybe.
