Travellers with a passion for world cinema will have the opportunity to combine a major event with a trip to Hong Kong this year.

Returning for its 36th outing in 2012, the Hong Kong International Film Festival will get underway on 21 March and run until 5 April.

Regarded as one of the leading events of its kind in Asia, the festival regularly screens more than 330 movies from over 50 countries, reaching an audience of some 600,000 people.

Among the highlights of the 2012 programme is a celebration of the career of Hong Kong director Peter Ho-Sun Chan, with films such as The Warlords from 2007 and 2009's Bodyguards and Assassins set to be shown.

There will also be a seminar featuring the filmmaker at the Jockey Club Cine Academy on 3 April.

A host of major events will be taking place in the city over the coming months, including the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Sevens rugby tournament, which will run from 23 to 25 March.
