Heathrow announces plans for Olympic Games terminal
26 Jan 2012

Heathrow airport has announced the design of a special Games terminal that will be dedicated to handling athletes departing from the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games this summer.

The building will be the departure point for some 10,100 competitors and will help the London hub handle a substantial increase in luggage and passengers on the day after the closing ceremony.

Airport operator BAA is expecting 13 August 2012 to be the busiest day in Heathrow's history, with the number of bags set to be 35% higher than on a normal day.

Initiatives planned to deal with the busy period include offering check-in and baggage collection at the Olympic and Paralympic Village and training 1,000 volunteers to meet and greet people arriving for the Games.

Nick Cole, head of Olympic and Paralympic planning at Heathrow, said the sporting event will represent a 'unique operational task' and a 'massive challenge'.

He added: 'Every part of the airport is working together to ensure we can give the athletes a warm welcome and ensure all passengers enjoy the atmosphere.'
