New York hotels proved more popular than ever in 2011, with a record 27.15m room nights sold.

Announcing official tourism industry figures for the year, promotional agency NYC & Company revealed that the number of overnight stays at properties in the city increased by 5% from the previous record figure achieved in 2010.

Hotel occupancy reached an average of 85% by the end of the year, while attendance at cultural venues and tourist attractions also rose to a new high of 21.9m people.

Overall, New York City welcomed a record 50.5m visitors throughout 2011, slightly more than the 50.2m estimated in December.

Commenting on the statistics, mayor Michael Bloomberg said the tourism industry 'remains a bright spot' for the destination.

He added: 'The city's diverse offerings, events and activities combined with a high quality of life continue to make New York City the world's premier destination for both leisure and business travellers.'
