WWII aircraft to go on display at New Orleans museum
27 Jan 2012
Travellers visiting New Orleans later this year can head to the National WWII Museum to see the attraction's latest acquisition - a restored P-51 Mustang.
The aircraft features in the new movie Red Tails, which tells the story of the World War II fighter pilots known as the Tuskegee Airmen, the first African-American aviators in the US military.
Boasting authentic Red Tail markings, the P-51 Mustang will be displayed in a new space at the National WWII Museum called the US Freedom Pavilion: The Boeing Center.
The 96ft-tall structure was built to house large exhibits and is due to open on 11 November this year.
Commenting on the recent acquisition, museum board member Todd Ricketts said the P-51 is an 'iconic aircraft' that will form a significant part of the institution's collection.
'It is also important to recognise and honour the Tuskegee Airmen who furthered the American war effort, and civil rights for all Americans, by doing what they saw as their patriotic duty,' he added.
