Los Angeles welcomes record 26.9m visitors in 2011

Los Angeles set new records for visitor numbers and expenditure in 2011, with some 26.9m people taking trips to the city, spending $15.2bn (£9.7bn).
The number of arrivals in the destination was 4.2% higher than in 2010, while the amount of money spent by tourists increased by 8% year-on-year.
International travellers made a strong contribution to the growth, with some 5.9m foreigners catching flights to Los Angeles for a break last year, marking a 7% rise on 2010.
Commenting on the positive figures, Mark Liberman, president and chief executive of local tourist board LA INC, said they represent 'great news' for businesses that rely on tourist spending.
He added: 'The increase was experienced in all areas of our city, as indicated by increased occupancy at hotels and attendance at restaurants, attractions and cultural institutions.'
A number of new developments and attractions could see the destination experiencing another strong year in 2012, with Transformers the Ride 3D at Universal Studios Hollywood among the planned openings over the coming months.
