Abu Dhabi hotels see most successful year ever

Abu Dhabi hotels experienced their most successful year on record in 2011, with guest arrivals surpassing 2.1m.

The emirate's properties beat the target of 2m visitors set by the local tourist board by some 6.5%, or more than 100,000 people.

December made a particularly strong contribution to the figures, with guest check-ins increasing by 26% year-on-year to more than 207,700 during the month.

Mubarak Al Muhairi, director-general of the Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority, said the performance in the final month of 2011 can be attributed to travellers taking seasonal breaks and staying to celebrate the beginning of the new year.

He added: 'These results should be seen as highly encouraging when viewed against a background of world economic uncertainties which are impacting many destinations.'

The UK remains the leading international source market for Abu Dhabi and the main contributor to the growing importance of Europe for the destination, with British tourist numbers reaching 139,319 last year, marking an increase of 18% from 2010.
