Calgary named Canada's Cultural Capital
3 Feb 2012

Calgary will take on the role of Canada's Cultural Capital in 2012 to recognise the 'thriving' arts scene in the city, Travel Alberta has revealed.

The destination will receive a grant from Canadian Heritage to boost the C$2m (£1.3m) it received from the local council last year to support the development of arts and culture.

Due to run from April this year until March 2012, the cultural celebrations will include a range of activities, including an international cultural exchange programme.

There will also be a 'mass-participation spectacle event', according to Travel Alberta.

In a recent report on CNN International's website, Calgary was named one of the top five places to visit in 2012, partly as a result of its low costs for transportation, hotels and other services.

The city will also enjoy a boost in profile this year as it celebrates the 100th anniversary of the Calgary Stampede with special events including the opening of the longest zip line in North America.
