Acclaimed production of Madam Butterfly returning to London
7 Feb 2012

Opera lovers will be booking flights and hotels in London this year to see a celebrated staging of Giacomo Puccini's great work Madam Butterfly.

The late director Anthony Minghella's take on the opera will be presented by the English National Opera at the London Coliseum from 8 May to 2 June.

Once described by the Sunday Telegraph as 'the most beautiful show of the year in operatic London' and last performed by the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the production will have ten afternoon and evening showings.

Minghella's adaptation of the opera is known for its combination of cinematic imagery and aspects of traditional Japanese theatre, as well as colourful costumes, elaborate sets and use of puppetry.

The title role will this year be filled by Mary Plazas, who played the part in the original staging in 2005.

London visitors will also have the opportunity to see some ballet at the Coliseum this summer, with Swan Lake due to be performed ten times between 3 and 11 August.
