President Obama to mark groundbreaking of Washington museum
20 Feb 2012

President Barack Obama will this week deliver a speech at the groundbreaking ceremony for the Smithsonian's National Museum of African-American History and Culture (NMAAHC) in Washington DC.

He will speak at the construction site on the National Mall between the Washington Monument and the National Museum of American History to mark the beginning of the new development.

The NMAAHC will be the only national museum in the United States devoted entirely to the documentation of African-American life, art, history and culture.

It is scheduled to open in 2015 and will be the only 'green' building on the National Mall.

While the attraction is under construction, visitors can head to the NMAAHC gallery at the National Museum of American History, which is currently hosting the exhibition Slavery at Jefferson's Monticello.

Due to run until 14 October 2012, the display looks at how Thomas Jefferson, the author of the Declaration of Independence, relied on slavery despite being an opponent of the system.
