Tourism Ireland has announced that several iconic landmarks and attractions around the world will 'go green' to mark St Patrick's Day on 17 March 2012.

The London Eye, the Burj Al Arab hotel in Dubai, Table Mountain in South Africa and the Empire State Building in New York are among the sites taking part in the initiative.

Niagara Falls and the television tower in Berlin's Alexanderplatz will be illuminated in green light for the first time this year.

Irish tourism minister Leo Varadkar said St Patrick's Day will be used as an opportunity to launch The Gathering 2013, a campaign encouraging international travellers to pay a visit to Ireland next year.

'This "greening" initiative and the other promotions will ensure we build up to 2013 by sustaining growth in overseas tourism in 2012,' he added.

Tourism Ireland chief executive Niall Gibbons said the agency is sending the message that there has never been a better time to visit Ireland, owing to the wealth of things to see and do in the destination and good value for money on offer to visitors.
