Art enthusiasts staying in hotels in Toronto this year will have the opportunity to learn more about one of the 20th century's greatest cultural figures at a new exhibition in the city.

A major survey of works by Pablo Picasso borrowed from the Musee National Picasso in Paris will open at the Art Gallery of Ontario on 1 May and run until 26 August 2012.

The French institution boasts a collection of more than 5,000 works the Spanish artist kept for himself and his family, ranging from sketchbooks to famous paintings.

Nearly 150 pieces from the archive will be presented in the touring exhibition, including paintings, sculptures, prints and drawings.

The Art Gallery of Ontario is the only venue in Canada that will host the display while the Musee National Picasso undergoes a major renovation.

Also coming to the Toronto gallery this year is a showcase of paintings and works on paper by Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, which will open on 20 October.
