Ljubljana has been ranked among the leading capital cities in Europe with regards to recent growth in the tourism industry.

In a study by Roland Berger Strategy Consultants, Slovenia's capital was grouped with Berlin and Stockholm in a list of destinations that saw the biggest increases in overnight stays by visitors in the five years from 2005 to 2010.

Ljubljana was named the leading European city in terms of growth in available bed capacity at accommodation facilities, followed by Tallinn and Istanbul.

It also topped the section of the study covering the proportion of international travellers staying overnight in the respective destinations during the five-year period.

As well as looking at specific aspects of the tourism and hotel industries in various locations, Roland Berger Strategy Consultants compiled a list of the top ten European capitals taking all criteria into account, which was topped by Paris, Amsterdam and Rome.

Adria Airways will boost access to Slovenia this month when it launches four weekly flights to Ljubljana from Luton airport.
