WTTC: Japan to stage full tourism recovery in 2012
9 Mar 2012

Japan's tourism industry is set to stage a full recovery in the first half of 2012 following last year's earthquake and tsunami, according to the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC).

In its fourth and final report since the natural disaster in March 2011, the council predicted that international demand for travel to the country will return to normal levels after falling by 62% in April last year.

The tourism sector's contribution to the Japanese economy fell by 3.9% as a result of the earthquake and tsunami but is expected to rise to 10,276bn yen (£79.8m) this year, slightly up on the 10,246bn yen recorded in 2010.

WTTC president and chief executive David Scowsill noted that Japan is the third largest travel and tourism market in the world, meaning its health is important for the entire global industry.

He added: 'Japan's travel and tourism recovery has been much better than anyone could have anticipated 12 months ago.

'With [the] help of a forceful marketing strategy, Japan is open and ready for business.'
