River cruises in Europe were a popular option among UK travellers in 2011, the Passenger Shipping Association (PSA) has revealed.

Some 80,000 people explored waterways on the continent during the year, marking a 7% increase on 2010.

The Rhone and Seine rivers in France saw a 28% increase in British cruise passenger numbers, while a twofold rise was recorded in combined voyages along the Rhine and Danube, which flow through countries including Germany and Austria.

On a global level, the number of UK travellers taking river cruises increased by 5%, although the figure does not include the Nile owing to the distortion caused by political unrest in Egypt.

There was growth of 11% in Russia, while 6% more people took river journeys in Asia and China last year.

PSA director Bill Gibbons said the appeal of sailings of this kind has 'never been stronger'.

'Passengers enjoy panoramic landscapes together with easy access to explore the heart of great cities and towns, and all while just unpacking once,' he added.
