US offers 'exceptional' hiking holidays

Travellers searching for a destination for a walking holiday have been encouraged to consider the United States, with Frommer's describing the country as an 'exceptional' place to hike.
Gene Shannon, a regional editor with the travel guide publisher, noted that America is home to nearly 400 national parks that can be explored on foot, most of which are very well maintained.
Mr Shannon also highlighted the 'unparalleled' variety of the country.
'You can traverse towering mountain peaks, lush woodlands, stark deserts or fertile rainforests, sometimes even within the same state,' he commented.
Discussing particular destinations, Mr Shannon pointed out that Hawaii is home to miles upon miles of 'stunning' coastline, as well as waterfalls, volcanoes and other impressive natural features.
Travellers also have the option of catching flights to San Francisco to explore northern California, which offers sights and attractions such as the Redwood National Forest and Mount Whitney, the highest peak in the continental United States.
