Third of Brits 'taking holidays to avoid Olympics'
3 Apr 2012

While the 2012 Olympic Games will be a source of pride and excitement for many Britons, a third have arranged summer holidays with the direct aim of escaping the event, according to a new survey.

The poll by foreign exchange firm Travelex suggested that approximately 10m people will get away from the hype associated with the Games by heading to Europe.

Traditional favourite Spain is expected to be the top choice for UK travellers hoping to get some distance from the sporting event.

Some 35% of respondents to the survey said they had already planned an overseas holiday and three-quarters of this group said the prospect of the Olympics had influenced their choice of departure dates.

Escaping the crowds was one of the top reasons given for wanting to vacate the country this summer, along with avoiding the extensive television coverage and a dislike of sport.

Commenting on the research, Travelex spokesman Elvin Eldic told the Daily Mail: 'While the Olympics should be a fantastic spectacle, it seems a large number of Brits would prefer to watch it from afar.'
