Travellers seeking out some truly unique and memorable experiences could find what they are looking for on a cruise, according to an expert.

Jane Archer, cruise correspondent and columnist for Telegraph Travel, gave a number of examples of regions and sights that are only accessible by sea.

She described Antarctica as 'truly extraordinary' and also recommended voyages to Spitsbergen in the Arctic Ocean, the Galapagos Islands and the Kimberley region in Australia.

Ms Archer was speaking at the recent Telegraph Cruise Show in London, shortly after returning from a cruise in South America that took her from Buenos Aires to Valparaiso in Chile and on to the Falkland Islands.

'Again, it's a journey that you have to do on a cruise ship,' she said of her latest trip.

'It's wonderful how going on a cruise opens up all of these places.'

British travellers interested in setting off on their first holiday at sea can sail to popular destinations such as the Mediterranean and the Norwegian fjords from Southampton and other UK ports.
