Flights to Washington DC could prove particularly popular among modern art enthusiasts this year, with two major exhibitions set to open in the city over the coming months.

Joan Miro: Ladder of Escape will come to the National Gallery of Art from 6 May to 12 August, providing an insight into a career that spanned almost a century.

Visitors will be able to see about 120 paintings, drawings, sculptures and prints highlighting the political themes in Miro's work, particularly his interest in Spanish and Catalonian identity.

Another celebrated modern artist, Jasper Johns, will be the focus of a display entitled Variations on a Theme, which will open at the Phillips Collection on 2 June and run until 9 September.

The exhibition will include nearly 100 examples of flags, numbers, targets and other subjects that have interested Johns over the past 50 years.

America's capital city will also provide plenty of attractions for music fans this year, such as the DC Jazz Festival, which will be held citywide from 1 to 10 June.
