British Airways has announced that construction is now underway on its first Airbus A380.

The airline has ordered 12 of the planes and is due to take delivery of the first model next year.

It has also signed an agreement with Boeing to acquire 24 787 Dreamliners, meaning it is set to be the first carrier with both aircraft types in its fleet.

BA chief executive Keith Williams said the liners are an important part of the company's £5bn, five-year investment in new aircraft, enhanced cabins, improved lounges and state-of-the-art technologies.

He also revealed that the airline has been working in partnership with Airbus to ensure the smooth delivery of the A380 next year.

'Until then, we'll continue working towards the successful delivery of both the A380 and B787, to ensure our customers have a fantastic flying experience on these amazing aircraft,' added Mr Williams.

Routes to be operated by the carrier's new planes will be announced in future.
