Brazil encourages visitors to explore far and wide

Embratur, the national tourism agency of Brazil, has launched an initiative encouraging travellers to seek out destinations and attractions throughout the country.

One of the key agenda points at a recent meeting between the organisation and its UK counterpart VisitBritain was promoting the experiences on offer beyond well-known cities such as Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo.

Marcelo Pedroso, Embratur's director of international markets, said one of the agency's goals during the 2014 Fifa World Cup is to ensure that 25% of overseas tourists visit locations other than those hosting football matches.

'We are stepping up the promotion of our tourist destinations in order to ensure that the 600,000 foreign visitors who will come to Brazil for the … World Cup are better distributed throughout the country,' he commented.

The meeting of Embratur and VisitBritain also included the renewal of an agreement between the two organisations, guaranteeing a lasting cooperation that will go beyond the major sporting events set to take place in the UK and Brazil over the coming years.
