Earthquake exhibit to open in San Francisco

Travellers visiting the west coast of the United States will soon be able to visit a new exhibit and planetarium show in San Francisco.

Earthquake will open at the California Academy of Sciences on 26 May and, according to the institution, will take viewers on a 'kinetic journey' towards understanding the phenomena that give the show its title.

The new feature occupies the entire west hall of the academy and will boast attractions including a walkthrough model of the planet, an earthquake simulator resembling a Victorian home and even an enclosure for live baby ostriches.

A new planetarium show will invite spectators to embark on a tour through space and time, flying over the San Andreas fault and viewing the earthquake that hit San Francisco in 1906.

Dr Greg Farrington, the centre's executive director, noted that the city and the wider California region are 'no strangers' to the destructive power of earthquakes.

'By showing … the science that underlies these natural events, we want to … help visitors understand how the great movements of the continents have produced the landscape we call home today,' he added.
