Dubai welcomes 5 cruise ships in a day for first time
18 Apr 2012

Recent growth in Dubai's cruise industry was illustrated this month when the emirate welcomed five liners on a single day for the first time.

The Port Rashid complex in the destination's dedicated cruise terminal hosted Queen Mary 2, Costa Victoria, Costa Favolosa, Pacific Princess and Silver Whisper, ships belonging to the UK, Italy, USA and Monaco respectively.

A total of 15,000 passengers were onboard the vessels, as well as 4,000 crew members.

The Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM) organised a gala reception to mark the achievement and provided information for visitors about the destination's culture and traditions.

Hamad bin Mejren, the DTCM's executive director of the cruise terminal, revealed that a total of 71 ocean liners are set to visit the emirate during the first six months of 2012, bringing some 275,000 guests with them.

Costa Cruises has been based in Dubai since 2006, while Royal Caribbean started using the emirate as its regional hub in the Middle East in 2010.
