More people will be encouraged to take holidays in the Mediterranean basin because of plans for countries in the region to cooperate more closely, according to a statement from the UN World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) director Frederic Pierret.

Speaking at a conference on the Tunisian island of Djerba, he told a delegation of tourism officials from countries such as Egypt, Morocco, Algeria and Turkey that it remains crucial to preserve the Mediterranean's role as a global tourism hub, reports AFP.

Mr Pierret pointed to the fact that the 29 countries situated around the Mediterranean attract roughly a third of global tourism flow as an indicator of the region's massive importance as a holiday destination.

'Closer cooperation between the north and south, as well as east and west' will boost the region's role even further, according to the UNWTO director.

The Tunisian government also used the conference to reassure holidaymakers that the country will continue to welcome sun-seeking leisure tourists despite its recent change of government, Reuters noted.
