The vast majority (99.1%) of bags checked in by air travellers in 2011 were delivered on time, according to the eighth annual SITA Baggage Report.

This is the highest rate recorded since the study was first published.

According to the research, the number of items being mishandled - meaning delayed, damaged, lost or stolen - has more than halved since 2007, falling from nearly 19 bags per 1,000 passengers five years ago to just under nine bags per 1,000 people in 2011.

Francesco Violante, chief executive of SITA, a company that provides communications services and IT to the aviation sector, described the figures as 'great news for the industry'.

He added: 'Significantly improving the handling of baggage to over 99% has saved airlines US$650m (£404m) while also providing better service to passengers.'

Mr Violante went on to note that the positive figures were achieved despite an increase in the overall number of air passengers to 2.87bn in 2011.
