Travellers 'should believe the hype about Brooklyn'

Travellers 'should believe the hype about Brooklyn'

Travellers planning a trip to New York City this year have been encouraged to 'believe the hype' about Brooklyn, with the local tourism agency highlighting some of the recent coverage and positive reviews the borough has received.

In the October 2011 issue of Travel and Leisure magazine, Brooklyn Heights was named one of the most beautiful neighbourhoods in the United States.

The district encompasses more than 600 houses dating back to before the Civil War and has been home to esteemed writers such as Truman Capote, Walt Whitman and Thomas Wolfe.

Brooklyn's 'literary landmarks' were the subject of a feature in the February 2012 edition of Conde Nast Traveler magazine, which noted that 'Los Angeles has its movie people, Paris has its fashion designers and New York has always had its writers'.

The growth of the area's accommodation sector was recently noted by the New York Post, with five new hotels opening in 2012, providing an additional 523 rooms.

Brooklyn borough president Marty Markowitz commented: 'From GQ and Conde Nast Traveler and New York Magazine to Zagat, everyone is singing the praises of Brooklyn, America's fourth largest city (and on track to become the third!).'
