New York targets $70bn gain from tourism

New York targets $70bn gain from tourism
26 Apr 2012

Tourism looks set to make an increasingly important contribution to New York City's finances over the coming years, with local authorities setting a new goal for the industry to generate $70bn worth of economic impact by 2015.

The target is paired with a plan to attract 55m visitors to the destination in the same period.

International travellers, who account for 50% of direct tourism spending, will be one of the focuses of the campaigns.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg said the new goals highlight the important role the travel and tourism sector plays in New York, adding that each visitor and every dollar they spend is of critical importance to the local economy.

He added: 'After reaching a record-breaking 50m visitors last year and setting our sights on attracting 55m visitors by 2015, New York City is working hard to remain the favourite destination for visitors from around the world.'

The targets were announced in the same week that Brand USA launched a new global marketing initiative designed to attract more international travellers to the United States.
