Gloomy weather boosts summer holiday bookings
27 Apr 2012

The recent spell of rainy weather in the UK has reportedly contributed to an increase in holiday bookings in sunny destinations.

A number of tour operators and travel providers have seen strong demand for summer hotspots during what could be one of the coldest Aprils on record.

Forthcoming bank holidays and the Queen's Diamond Jubilee week could also have contributed to the trend.

One company that has seen an increase in trade is Virgin Atlantic, which has reported a 37% year-on-year rise in bookings, with the Caribbean proving particularly popular.

Greg Dawson, a spokesman for the airline, said: 'Britain's bad weather has created a flood of passengers eager to fly to sun-soaked destinations such as Barbados, St Lucia and Antigua.'

Virgin Atlantic also operates flights to Jamaica, Grenada, Tobago and other destinations in the Caribbean, as well as popular holiday hotspots elsewhere in the world such as Orlando, Dubai and Cape Town.
