Tourism industry aims to harness media power
2 May 2012
The UN World Tourism Organisation has highlighted the need for the travel sector to create closer links with the media if the industry is to realise its full potential.
A number of influential figures explored this topic at a recent meeting in Egypt, including the country's tourism minister Mounir Fakhry Abdel-Nour.
Mr Abdel-Nour said international travel is largely driven by perceptions people have of certain destinations, which can often be shaped by the media.
UNWTO secretary-general Taleb Rifai noted that 1bn people will venture overseas in 2012 and described tourism as a 'global socio-economic phenomenon' that is not being fully reflected by media outlets.
'We believe that to maximise the potential of tourism as a true driver of development and wellbeing for all we need to bring tourism administrations, the private sector and the media closer together,' he added.
The travel sector represents 30% of Egyptian exports and provides jobs for more than 16m people in the country.
International arrivals fell from 14m in 2010 to 9.5m last year as a result of political disputes, but Egypt remained the second most visited nation in the Middle East.
