Tourists invited into Icelandic volcano
2 May 2012
Travellers who enjoy unusual experiences will have the chance to take part in an unprecedented tour in Iceland this summer.
Visitors to the country are being invited to venture into the magma chamber of Thrihnukagigur, a volcano near Reykjavik that has been dormant for some 4,000 years.
The tours will be available for just six weeks from 15 June to 31 July.
Participants will reach the location via a 30-minute drive from the Icelandic capital and will then set off on a 40-minute hike across a lava field.
The experience will also include a descent 120 metres down from the summit of the volcano into the crater and an hour inside the chamber itself, with more time dedicated to learning about the impressive natural structure.
An environmental impact assessment is being carried out to gauge the effect that tourism could have on the site.
Facilities including a tunnel entrance and a viewing platform could be built in future if the study concludes that visitor tours are a sustainable option.
