Brits 'refusing to forego holidays'
4 May 2012

The majority of Britons are not willing to sacrifice their holidays this year, despite ongoing economic problems and financial challenges across the UK, according to research.

British Airways American Express Credit Cards carried out a survey which found that just 9% of people plan to go without a break in 2012, compared to 21% who did so last year.

This is despite the fact that a quarter (24%) of respondents admitted that their trips are likely to be more expensive in 2012.

Many respondents identified a holiday as the one big purchase they will make this year.

The average consumer will fork out £923 for flights, accommodation and spending money in 2012, according to American Express, with a collective total of £36bn set to be spent on getaways.

Julie Hay, head of British Airways American Express Credit Cards, said: 'Last year saw many people exercising frugality in the face of difficult economic conditions, but it is promising to see that this year we are likely to see a turnaround in that trend.'
