Animal lovers catching flights to Los Angeles for a break on America's west coast this year can enjoy some new wildlife encounters in the city.

Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens recently opened a new exhibit entitled LAIR, which stands for living amphibians, invertebrates and reptiles.

The complex provides a new habitat for the zoo's collection of reptiles, which is known for its rare animals.

Visitors to the new conservation facility can look out for Chinese giant salamanders, crocodiles, venomous snakes, scorpions, blue frogs and more.

Los Angeles Zoo is also home to a wide range of mammals, including chimpanzees, black bears, elephants, giraffes and jaguars, as well as a dedicated gorilla reserve.

Other attractions on offer in LA this year include the Cirque du Soleil show Iris: A Journey through the World of Cinema, which debuted at the Kodak Theatre, the home of the Academy Awards, in July 2011.

The production combines acrobatics, dance, projections and live music.
