The culinary scenes of Spain and the United States have received endorsements in the 2012 World's 50 Best Restaurants list, with six eateries from these countries featuring in the top ten.

El Celler de Can Roca in Girona, near Barcelona, was ranked second, while Mugaritz and Arzak in San Sebastian featured in third and eighth places respectively.

Sixth and seventh positions were taken by Per Se in New York City and Chicago's Alinea respectively.

Eleven Madison Park in New York climbed 14 places in this year's list to make it into the top ten.

Noma in Copenhagen once again topped the ranking, receiving the title of world's best restaurant for the third consecutive year.

Henrik Kahn, director of VisitDenmark in the UK, commented: 'With four new Michelin-starred restaurants and a total of 14 stars, Copenhagen has underlined its position as a gastronomic travel destination.

'Congratulations to Noma on this impressive hat-trick.'

Based on votes by readers of Restaurant magazine, the list also featured D.O.M in Sao Paulo and Osteria Francescana in Italy among the top five, while Dinner by Heston Blumenthal in London was a new entry in ninth place.
