Edinburgh visitors urged to take in local views

Edinburgh visitors urged to take in local views
9 May 2012

As well as enjoying the city's urban attractions and experiences, people staying in Edinburgh hotels this year have been encouraged to visit locations offering views of the surrounding hills and natural features.

Lucy Bird, chief executive of Marketing Edinburgh, explained that the Scottish capital is situated on seven hills, the most famous of which is Arthur's Seat, a popular tourist attraction.

This site overlooks the Scottish Parliament building and Holyrood Palace, the Queen's official residence when she is visiting Scotland.

'The hill can be climbed by foot and offers unrivalled views of the city [and] there are plenty of picnic spots at the top to take a well-earned rest,' said Ms Bird.

Visitors can also look out across the Edinburgh skyline from Calton Hill and the Scott Monument on Princes Street.

The latter pays tribute to Scottish writer Sir Walter Scott and is thought to be the world's largest monument to an author.
