See whales and dolphins in the Azores

Animal lovers looking for a new holiday idea have been encouraged to pay a visit to the Azores to see and encounter some of the island group's marine wildlife.

According to the local tourist board, the archipelago - which is situated in the Atlantic Ocean and owned by Portugal - is recognised by many marine biologists as the best place in Europe to see whales.

Sperm whales and several types of dolphin are resident in the area year-round, while migratory species including pilot, killer, sei and fin whales, as well as the biggest of all, the blue whale, visit at various times during the year.

Whale watching excursions are available from four of the nine islands that comprise the Azores - Sao Miguel, Terceira, Faial and Pico.

Visitors can also sign up for tours providing the opportunity to swim with wild dolphins.

The animals are free to swim away whenever they want, but usually seem to enjoy encountering and playing with humans.

Travellers can reach the Azores by catching flights to Ponta Delgada, which are available direct from London Heathrow with SATA or via Lisbon with TAP Portugal.
