14 May 2012
Asia is leading the way in terms of growth in global travel, according to research by Amadeus.
The company, which provides technology solutions for the industry, revealed that the continent is home to seven of the ten busiest inter-city air travel routes.
A survey of worldwide passenger trends in 2011 found that Indonesia and the Philippines experienced substantial growth in activity, as well as China, India and the other two nations in the BRIC group - Brazil and Russia.
Asia saw large increases in inter-regional air traffic last year, with passenger numbers on flights from Europe and North America increasing by 9%.
Routes linking Europe to North America remain the busiest of all, with more than 60m people using air services between these two regions in 2011.
The Amadeus research also looked at connecting traffic, indicating that more than half of all passengers in the triangle between Asia, Europe and North America transfer between aircraft at least once.
