Brits 'still holidaying abroad despite govt campaign'
15 May 2012
A government campaign encouraging Britons to take holidays at home has largely fallen on deaf ears, new figures suggest.
Foreign currency provider Caxton FX commissioned a YouGov poll of more than 2,000 adults which found that more than two-thirds (67%) of people are still planning to head overseas this summer.
The government spent some £3m on its Holiday at Home promotion but 13% of survey respondents said they had never even seen any of the adverts.
One in every 25 people surveyed said the campaign had actually made them less likely to consider a break in the UK.
James Hickman, managing director of Caxton FX, said: 'In spite of substantial investment, it seems that Brits are still committed to holidays abroad and with the pound currently very high against the euro, holidays abroad can offer good value.'
A fifth (19%) of consumers in north-east and north-west England - the most positively affected regions - said the advertisements encouraged them to take a domestic holiday.
