Consumer group welcomes caps on mobile roaming charges

Consumer Focus has welcomed new regulations extending price caps on mobile roaming charges for people travelling in the European Union.

The limits will apply to data downloads from 1 July 2012, providing savings for people who use their phones to access maps, email accounts and social networks abroad.

According to the European Commission, the caps will result in savings of more than €1,000 (£801) per year for business travellers in the EU and could provide benefits of over €200 for families.

Commission vice president Neelie Kroes said the new regulations will help to create 'a roaming market for the smartphone generation'.

Marzena Lipman, policy manager at Consumer Focus, said further cuts to the charges phone companies can place on customers travelling in Europe are 'very welcome'.

She added: 'The data roaming caps are particularly good news, as data use can incur some of the biggest and most unexpected bills for consumers.'

Europeans are expected to spend about €5bn on mobile roaming this year - a saving of some €15bn from what the same services would have cost in 2007.
