Virgin to enable inflight phone calls

Virgin to enable inflight phone calls
16 May 2012

Virgin Atlantic is set to introduce technology allowing passengers to make and receive phone calls during flights.

The carrier claimed that it will be the first airline to offer such a service.

Customers will also be able to send and receive text messages, access email accounts and make limited use of the internet via a GPRS facility.

The technology will initially be available on Virgin Atlantic's Airbus A330 planes operating flights to New York from London.

It is also set to feature on Boeing 747 aircraft that are currently being refurbished, with nearly 20 liners set to offer the option to make phone calls by the end of 2012.

Steve Griffiths, the airline's chief operating officer, said: 'We have listened to what customers want and connectivity in the air is always on the wish list.'

Virgin Atlantic is investing some £100 million in its A330 fleet, resulting in improvements including a redesigned first class cabin.
