One of North America's most famous tourist attractions will next month provide the setting for an ambitious stunt by aerialist Nik Wallenda.

The tightrope walker has gained permission from officials in both the United States and Canada to complete a high wire crossing of Niagara Falls.

Set to take place on the morning of Friday 15 June, the event will see Mr Wallenda cover a distance of approximately 550 metres above Horseshoe Falls, the most famous and recognisable part of the waterfall system.

Mr Wallenda said this feat has been a dream of his ever since he first saw the natural spectacle when he was six years old.

Janice Thomson, chair of the Niagara Parks Commission (NPC), said the walk will be the latest instalment in a series of stunts and daredevil attempts at the site.

'This event will allow NPC and our colleagues at the New York State Park to showcase our world-class venues and inspire all those who wish to make Niagara their vacation destination of choice,' she added.

The waterfall system is located on the border between the US and Canada and can be seen on day trips from either New York City or Toronto.
