Hong Kong hotels have been proving a popular option among travellers so far this year, figures released by the local tourism agency suggest.

The Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) announced that visitor arrivals in the destination surpassed 11.22m in the first quarter of 2012, marking a 15.6% increase from the same period last year.

Some 5.56m people visiting the city during the period stayed for at least one night, 8.6% more than in the first three months of 2011.

Commenting on the figures, Dawn Page, HKTB director in the UK and northern Europe, said the organisation was 'delighted' to see a 10.1% rise in arrivals from the UK.

'We expect these numbers to carry on growing as Hong Kong gears up for an exciting series of programmes this summer to draw even more visitors,' she added.

The Hong Kong Summer Spectacular will boost the profile of the destination with an array of events, shopping discounts and other offerings from 22 June to 31 August this year, while the opening of the Kai Tak cruise terminal in mid-2013 will also help local tourism.
