Quirky sights to mark Golden Gate Bridge's 75th anniversary
22 May 2012

Travellers staying in hotels in San Francisco this year will have the opportunity to see some memorable sights as part of a celebration of the 75th anniversary of the opening of the Golden Gate Bridge.

One location that will be marking the occasion is the Westfield San Francisco shopping centre on Market Street.

Up to 31 July 2012, visitors to the mall will be able to see a pop-up version of Crissy Field, a former airfield that is now part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

The attraction will feature a giant chess set, lawn chairs, a picnic table and video screens showcasing images from the bridge's history, while a replica of the famous landmark will also be on display at the retail centre.

People visiting San Francisco before 30 June this year can head downtown to the Hyatt Regency hotel to see a 13-foot model of the bridge made out of 30,000 toothpicks.

The unusual spectacle is part of a Ripley's Believe It or Not exhibition of various items inspired by the city.
