Travellers heading to Brazil over the coming years will benefit from more choice as a result of the major sporting events taking place in the country, according to Embratur, the national tourist board.

Flavio Dino, the organisation's president, said now is a 'great' time to visit the South American nation, with the 2014 Fifa World Cup and 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games just around the corner.

He noted that preparations for these landmark events are leading to an expanding range of hotels, restaurants and services for international visitors on all budgets.

Post Office Travel Money released a report this month showing that UK consumers will enjoy better value in Brazil in 2012 following the recent slump in the value of the real against the pound.

Mr Dino commented: 'We welcome the news that as a result of the strengthening pound against the Brazilian real, it is more affordable than ever to enjoy what our country has to offer British holidaymakers.'

Travellers can reach the country by taking flights to Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo and Salvador, among other cities.
