Study predicts future of airports

The next 13 years could see airports across the world adopting operating models similar to those of mini-cities, bus stations and shopping malls, according to a new report.
Amadeus, a technology provider and transaction processor for the travel industry, released a study identifying customer issues regarding the airport experience and predicting how bases will reinvent themselves up to 2025.
One model highlighted in the research is the mini-city - a self-contained complex with retail, entertainment, dining, accommodation and work facilities.
The report also predicted that airports could develop to mimic retail centres, with shops and amusements that could even attract non-fliers.
Another possible concept for the future is the 'walkway', which would see passengers conducting many of the current airport processes at home or in a separate virtual terminal.
Julia Sattel, senior vice president of airline IT for Amadeus, said the aviation sector has an 'exciting future' but stressed that airlines, airports and the industry's 'whole ecosystem' must work together to realise its potential.
The company's report included case studies focusing on 11 major hubs around the world, including Singapore Changi, London Gatwick and New York JFK.
