About 4m British people, or 8% of the adult population, are set to make the most of the forthcoming double bank holiday weekend marking the Queen's Diamond Jubilee by taking at least one overnight trip in the United Kingdom, according to VisitEngland.

This trend is set to provide a £700m boost in tourism spending for the UK economy.

Some 3.4m travellers will take their break in England, spending just under £600m, the research found.

About 6m Brits are currently undecided about taking an overnight trip this weekend, with a further 1.2m planning to head to an overseas destination.

James Berresford, VisitEngland's chief executive officer, said it was 'great to see' that so many people are planning to make the most of the double bank holiday as an opportunity to get out for a day trip or a short break.

He added: 'The Queen's Diamond Jubilee will kick off the summer in royal style and showcase our heritage to the world.'
