DK highlights 'alternative royal London'
1 Jun 2012
DK Travel Guides has recommended 'alternative royal London' for people interested in visiting some lesser-known sites and attractions during the year of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.
The publisher said the city's royal heritage is evident in all sorts of locations, from palaces and parks to theatres and museums.
Queen Anne's Gate in Westminster, for instance, is home to a statue of the former monarch who gave her name to a style of furniture.
Prince Albert Bridge in west London is described by DK Travel as 'perhaps not the grandest' of Prince Albert's legacies in the city, but 'probably the prettiest'.
The bridge, which was recently renovated and reopened in December last year, is painted pink and lit by 4,000 bulbs at night.
Other attractions to look out for include the Queen's Chapel on Marlborough Road, which was built for Charles I's wife Henrietta Maria in 1627 and features an interior with an altarpiece designed by Annibale Carraci, and Grosvenor Square in Mayfair, the only square in London owned by the Crown.
