Lufthansa debuts new Boeing 747
7 Jun 2012
The new Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental is now in commercial service, following Lufthansa's launch of the aircraft on a route from Frankfurt to Washington Dulles airport in the United States.
Initially, the airline will use the plane to operate six weekly flights to Washington on every day except Tuesday, boosting capacity on the route by 6.3%.
The first Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental service carried regular scheduled passengers as well as special guests including Lufthansa chairman and chief executive Christoph Franz and Elizabeth Lund, Boeing's vice president and general manager of the 747 programme.
Mr Franz described the new liner as an 'exceptional' aircraft.
Commenting on its addition to the airline's fleet, he added: 'Lufthansa has created a product that is not only in line with our company's commitment to innovation, technology and efficiency, but that also offers qualities and features that are sure to maximise our passengers' inflight experience.'
The plane is equipped with a total of 362 seats - 262 in economy, 92 in business and eight in the first class cabin.
It also features Lufthansa's new business class product, which is designed to provide more space and privacy for passengers.
