13 Jun 2012

SriLankan Airlines has reached an agreement to join the oneworld alliance, which already includes major carriers such as British Airways, Iberia and Qantas.

The new member is set to join late next year with sponsor Cathay Pacific providing support during the implementation process.

SriLankan already has a codeshare arrangement in place with oneworld member designate Malaysia Airlines and has announced an agreement in principle to set up similar partnerships with Royal Jordanian and S7 Airlines.

The flag carrier's addition will bring three new destinations to the alliance's global network - Kochi, Tiruchirapalli and Thiruvananthapuram in southern India.

Tom Horton, American Airlines' chief executive officer and chairman of the oneworld governing board, said: 'Today's agreement with SriLankan Airlines adds even more value for our customers, who have made oneworld the first choice airline alliance for the world's frequent international travellers.'

Sri Lanka's national carrier is based in Colombo and operates an international network including flights to Hong Kong, London Heathrow, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore.
