Tourism Ireland has highlighted the country's status as a top golfing destination ahead of the Irish Open later this month.

Niall Gibbons, chief executive of the tourism body, said the nation offers visiting golfers 'the complete package - with top courses, stunning scenery and the warmest of welcomes'.

He made his comments after Golf Digest magazine named eight Irish venues among its list of the top 100 courses outside the US.

Royal County Down in Northern Ireland was number one on the list, with Portmarnock in County Dublin at 12 and Royal Portrush - the venue for the Irish Open - at number 13.

Mr Gibbons described this month's tournament as 'another wonderful opportunity to put our golf in the international spotlight and we are leveraging the potential of this prestigious sporting event'.

The Irish Open is due to get underway on Thursday 28 June and will boast a field containing ten major champions, including local heroes Darren Clarke and Rory McIlroy.
